The art of dressing for autumn

Autumn is the season of layering and the one I find most difficult to get right.

My problem starts with the fact that we’re not quite ready to say goodbye to our summer clothes, but it is too soon for heavy layers. Then the weather can’t make its mind up to be sunny one minute, blowing a gale and torrential downpour the next. And the shops aren’t helping either as they are full of holiday bargains, as well as new pieces that are catching our eye.

So I bit the bullet and started my Autumn wardrobe refresh last weekend. It is now a blend of pieces with light layers to continue wearing some of my favourite items and see me through the changeable weather.

By the time I had finished my update I had so many tips to share with you! Just making a few simple tweaks are all it takes for a seamless update from summer to autumn and here’s how I did it.

Start with the summer (ish) items that you should keep out to mix and match which will give you more wear including:⭐ Vest tops – layer under a shirt and keep it open.⭐ T.shirts – wear under a sleeveless dress. ⭐ Dresses – add a tank top over a long sleeved dress, which tricks the eye into looking like a top and skirt co-ord. ⭐ Actually put things together in your wardrobe so your outfits are ready to grab and go.

And there’s more!

To transition from light summer to layered autumn here are my seven top tips in the art of dressing for the new season:

🍂

1 You’ll see chocolate brown and burgundy everywhere this Autumn as we introduce warmer, earthier tones into our wardrobes. If these colours don’t suit you stick to navy and grey brightened up with orange, pink, red and green.

🍂

2 Live in denim? Swap a white or pale blue wash to a darker indigo, grey or black.

🍂

3 It is too early to get the knits out, the same with leather and suede jackets, so go for a shower resistant jacket and a sweatshirt, hoodie or cardigan as a light layer.

🍂

4 Checks (not tartan) paisley (Boho) and cow or zebra print will add drama and give you an instant seasonal shift.

🍂

5 I’ve put the pretty and delicate summer bags away and got out leather and canvas totes and mini backpacks for my daily essentials. Anything that is rain repellent and fits an umbrella basically!

🍂

6 It is too cold for sandals but not quite warm enough for boots, so trainers and clogs will see you through the odd shower with ballet flats and round toed leather pumps for evening.

🍂

7 And finally, dig out a leather belt, the black or brown will go with all autumnal shades and keep your body shape in proportion when adding a light layer.

And remember if you need help with an Autumn wardrobe refresh I’m only a call  / email away!
