Back in the 80s Britney and Justin showed us how not to do double denim! Thankfully the hardest working fabric in fashion never goes out of style, so here are my ‘jeanius’ styling tips to wear denim in 2025.
Double Denim

When done well double denim can be an effective co-ord with maximum impact for minimal effort. The key is to match the colours / washes as closely as possible, so buy the two garments from the same outlet at the same time. Play with the proportions – a blazer length jacket over a mini skirt or cropped jacket with a midi skirt work really well. Also break up the block colour with a nifty accessory. A thin brown belt, a trench coat, penny loafers and oversized plain tote bag will bring your look bang up to date.

Jeans

Pear shapes these are for you! At first glance the bold silhouette of barrel leg jeans may be off putting but like all jeans you have to try them on to find your perfect fit. The key here is the curved seams that follow rather than fight against your shape and high waist. One note of caution is the length – for balance show a bit of ankle and wear with flat trainers, loafers or ballet flats not ankle boots. Tuck or French tuck your shirt or sweatshirt in to make the most of this shape. Whether they will stand the test of time like skinny and bootleg remains to be seen.

Jumpsuit

With a nod to the 70s a belt is a must to balance out your top and bottom half with a jumpsuit. The chunky buttons and pockets will draw attention to your chest. Tall and petites can wear a jumpsuit with confidence and are best suited to a short waist, don’t be tempted to wear a vest or top underneath which will add unwanted bulk to keep the lines flowing.

Dress

Introduce a universally appealing shirt dress to your wardrobe and you’ll never look back. Go for a lightweight finish or one that has plenty of stretch in the material. Choose a buttoned front if you want to emphasise your curves, whereas a looser shirt style will skim those apple shaped rounder tummies. Looks equally good with long or short sleeves and side pockets are an added bonus.

Skirt

The availability of shapes is great news for all body shapes. A mini looks great with an oversized shirt or blazer, a pencil skirt can be dressed up or down with a t-shirt or lovely blouse, a midi is a great length for trainers and boots, while an A line can be smart enough for work with the right fitted buttoned cardigan. Whatever shape and style you love go for it and make it your own with your favourite tops and footwear.

Jacket

For years the biker style and classic short Western style have dominated, but this year we will see more longer belted styles. Almost safari style with double pockets, a loose tie belt will synch in your middle to define your waist and keep your top and bottom lines in proportion. Choose the lightest weight possible so as not to add too much bulk to your top half and make sure the length is past your hips for balance.

Shirt

It’s the details that make the difference here, so look for embroidery on the shoulders and volume sleeves. Whatever you choose wear a size up if you are going to wear it open over a t-shirt / vest or in your normal size for a close fit. Either way out over the top of your waistband is a styling must.

Waistcoat

One way to elevate your wardrobe staples is to choose them in a different fabric. The combined versatility of being able to add a thin layer underneath is an extra bonus to a denim waistcoat. Keep the details as simple as possible with metal buttons for a clean-cut silhouette. The best ones are long enough to fit and flatter your torso while gently flaring out over the hips giving much needed shape to rhubarbs (straight up and down athletic / boyish shapes).
